[Otona Magazine] Interview with Sanjo-Riku #3

info 2ch

- The producer's intention is to have "One story finishes in one ep"
- The base of the story are usually up to the screen writers who's responsible for the ep, but Sanjo Riku-san will be the one to pick the Digimon.
- It says the reason Nene is in Hong Kong and Kiriha is in America is because these countries are extreme popular for Digimon.
- Nene becomes an actress was originally set by Yonemura-san.
- The series now seems to set its homing to just one theme.
- The choices of Digimon that picked for the ep, they try to use the ones that didn't get to be in the Anime yet.
- Shiraishi-san is initially playing the voice for Cho-Hakkaimon, play like usual/normal (voice?), it seems to be advice from people.
- As with previous ep, having Taichi and Masaru, the protagonist of First and Previous Digimon Series(before Xros Wars)to show up in this season, then they thought if these two are going to show up, other protagonists(Daisuke, Takato & Takuya(Hopefully others too!) should show up too right, therefore (which you saw on ep 68)other protagonists are appearing.

  1. ok.. sow can someone explain why they pointed that out at the end?

  2. What does he mean by the story ends in one episode? Don't like the sound of this.

What theme is he talking about?

So there reasoning for adding the other leads is, since we're putting Taichi in hunters, why not put the other leads in it too? WTF?

  3. "One story finishes in one ep"
.............. Seems like they're making YH to be all about MotW series with very few different episodes that almost has nothing to do with the continuity....
Time to wait the next Digimon Xros Wars: i guess.....

    ReplyDelete
  4. Guess that explains the mostly "filler" content we're mostly having.

Though hopefully, episodes that would be under "That day" arc would be an exception.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Basically they're saying that they want to have stories that finish in a single episode rather than multi-episode arcs. As noted, the trouble with this is that the way the plot is driven in this season of Xros Wars makes those stories seem of very little consequence; in the first series, it may not really have mattered overall how many Code Crowns the heroes got, but at least it seemed like they were progressing towards some kind of greater goal.

Well, at least there are strong hints now that the show is getting more plot-focussed. We just have to bide our time.

    If this really happens!
I just want to say one sentence they destroyed digimon.
    And i hate that.

  7. Riku-san we don't need another Metal Fight Beyblade or Bakugan Battle Brawlers-like show! >_<

  8. I mean in terms of blandness and awful ratings, this can't even be considered a Pokémon-like show because Pokémon actually had decent ratings far above Hunters' 1.6%!

    ReplyDelete
  9. What if like the first season this season could also have been divided into two parts?

Generally DotW episodes for the first half which we're now watching, whilst the 2nd half would be mainly plot driven?

    ReplyDelete
  10. That translates to "We are not going to bother with a plot, enjoy the fillers!"

  11. @Reiji

I share the same sentiments as you. The first arc will contain single episode stories, with the identity of the watchmaker old man keep in great suspense.

The watchmaker old man will probably reveal his true identity nearing to the end of the first arc. I think he's unlikely Dark knightmon as Dark Knightmon has already been absorbed by Baguramon, and Baguramon's always above him in rank.

I watched the recent episode in English Subbed just now, and I thought it's pretty good. They are creating some climax, like chaos spread all over the world, and finally the watchmaker old man will reveal his true evil identity and create further chaos all over the world. Taiki mentioned the centre of the fight is his town, rather than Japan in the recent episode. Tactimon and Darkness Baguramon died there.. So,......you know why I think the old man is D-Baguramon in disguise? I may not be correct, but I am suspecting..

    @Anonymous

Pokemon anime is very very light in tone, and its own franchise is aimed at children, but some late teens/young adults who grew up with Pokemon still like it. I think many many Japanese children watched it as it's interesting and light in tone, and that's why the ratings are high.

Digimon Xros Wars Shounen Hunters' storyline is quite dark in tone, and cannot be compared with Pokemon. It's not bad, but I doubt the anime really appeals to many many young children. Xros Wars Fans are mainly 10+, 20+ of age. Also, Digimon has some years of break in between some series, which may affect its popularity.

  12. "I mean in terms of blandness and awful ratings, this can't even be considered a Pokémon-like show because Pokémon actually had decent ratings far above Hunters' 1.6%!"

Well, the new Pokémon season actually had some arcs among the plot to make things interesting like the Don Battle and Plasma vs Rocket arcs.
I would say the current Digimon season is actually in the same levels as the last two Naruto fillers arcs.

  13. I hate fillers!! They crap all the animes!! Why do they even exist?!! Anime makers are supposed to make anime with plot! not start drawing and whatever it comes out its alright! I dont like what i am about to say but, The new generations are too bored to live! And i am young too! So i blame my self either!

The oldest anime where creating HUGE animes which every episode was in plot! "Digimon Adventure is one of those too!" Why didn't they just let it the way it is?!

    ReplyDelete
  14. SoOoOo we will have many fillers episodes, oh well, I wont mind~ I hope they show us more new digimons <3 and Akari & Zenjirou will get X-loader hopefully! 8DDD

  15. Aw... damn i was writing "Digimon Xros Wars: <*Insert random title here>" without the * but the part doesn't appear.

"- As with previous ep, having Taichi and Masaru, the protagonist of First and Previous Digimon Series(before Xros Wars)to show up in this season, then they thought if these two are going to show up, other protagonists(Daisuke, Takato & Takuya(Hopefully others too!) should show up too right, therefore (which you saw on ep 68)other protagonists are appearing."

That part make me thing that only Taichi and Masaru that was planned... but considering how it was only Taichi that's revealed on that V-Jump...

    @Jason
I think the reason why Japanese kids liked Pokemon more was because of the fact that Pokemon was never died as an anime (i mean always releasing new episodes like other big family anime such as Doraemon and Crayon Shinchan), and also it's there's Pokemon games (that's the strongest point of Pokemon franchise) that back it up.

  16. @X7SBKSD

Ok..LOL, I guess the xros wars writers can start writing Kiri-tai filler episodes every week. YATTA, arigato kiriha, *Hugs* since some of us don't like the filler episodes. All Kiri-tai fans will stay in tune closely with the show. LOL... I think it's okay to have such filler episodes, as it isn't 100% filler. The old man is up to no good, dame dame. People seem to have forgotten that there's actually a plot admist the filler episodes which is well-hidden. That is the intentions of the watchmaker old man...

^Actually even Metal Fight Beyblade has a real plot and arcs, this non-plot season cannot even compare Metal Fight, which is actually pretty good after all. Dunno about Bakugan since I've never watched it.

Seriously this sucks, I've been waiting for plot to start but really..? One story finishes in one episode? Seriously what's your problem, my dear writers?

Well, I'm still trying to be positive with this season and not give up with it because I really adore new characters... Even TAGIRU thought everybody seems to be annoyed with him. He keeps stealing the spot-light but so did Taiki in earlier season, so stop complaining.

I still hope they could give more screentime for Rival Team and as well for Hideaki thought.. And also for Yuu. .__.

  18. - The producer's intention is to have "One story finishes in one ep"

....I am becoming really disappointed in the writers of Digimon here...

  19. I will copy and paste what I write in another site here....

"Maybe some mysterious storyline that keep you pointing and discussing something is better than straight-forward storyline that you can see the ending suddenly after first ep.Sometimes…:D"

I can say this because I discuss with someone and found that ep 69-72 can be 2 fillers and 2 non-fillers if you noticed something in summary. It's one story in one ep.YES but it isn't mean that it can't hide some true plot in it.or Can't do something about its setting or character developement

If Season2 will be plot-driven one Because crunchyeoll listed Hunters only 24 eps.(Well…I saw many anime played this formula and get a great success too likes ep1-13 was a setting and character ep14-26 was the time to delivers all of its story example is Kobato or Letter bee).Hope it won’t disappointed us.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Who said Hunters ratings are always around 1.6%?
    Source please.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I just re-watched adventure 02 first episode much better than Hunters first. It had plot right from the start!

    ReplyDelete
  22. The only thing interesting about this is the fact they want to put in Digimon that haven't appeared in the anime yet.. at least that's one plus?

Right now there isn't plot but.. there's going to be eventually. The ending of the last episode hinted at it with the previous characters. So something's coming.. eventually. T.T I don't know how I'll wait for it though..

    ReplyDelete
  23. "- The choices of Digimon that picked for the ep, they try to use the ones that didn't get to be in the Anime yet."

More like "The choices of digimon are all either obscure (never appearing anything but the card game or something like that) and/or re-colors"

@Everyone complaining: "Filler" You keep using that word. It does not mean what you think it means.

Filler is what happens when an anime is either too close to being ahead of, or far behind the manga.

And this ONLY applies to when manga is directly or mostly (Yugioh's second series was also loosely based on the manga) adapted into anime

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Mattwo
Actually.....anything that detracts from the main plot at hand is and/or can be considered filler, as well as the description you provided.

So....say there is a series not based on a manga or light novel or Visual Novel (or any other media that I may have missed) about a superhero and he protects his identity.

One episode, someone finds out about who he is and the episode ends on a cliffhanger.

The next 3 episodes involve him continuing to do his superhero duties with no mention of ever being found out only for that 4th episode to pick up the plot again of someone discovering his secret.

    Those 3 episodes are filler.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hmmm.... imo i think we need to wait longer before we start saying that this season is ruined, for all we know Sanjo might just be hiding something

  26. Taichi & UlforceV-dramon!!
    Taichi & WarGreymon!!
    Daisuke & Imperialdramon!!
    Takato & Dukemon!!
    Takuya & AncientGreymon!!
    Kouta & Alphamon!!
    Masaru & ShineGreymon!!
    Tsurugi & VictoryGreymon!!

Wish I could see all those guys in the same show...

  27. @Jason.

Indeed. For now we can't exactly tell the true nature of Clockmaker-jiisan, despite how enigmatic and suspicious he is. Sure we can all assume many things about him.. He could be an old enemy who assumed an entirely unrecognizable form and pulling the strings in this Season, or he knows everything about the DigiQuartz and the source of the chaos it brings, yet, writers keep him mum to both the other characters and audience alike.

Ever watched US action cartoon series? I think the writers might be taking a cue from it and applying it to this season. Hence, the "one story finishes in one episode" answer.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @ Anonymous 03:16

No offense but you really need to give Digimon’s writers more credit, stand-alone episodes do not equal filler. For example, just look at what Doctor Who has been doing since 2005. Every episode of Doctor Who is MOTW with the main plot (if it is mentioned at all) only references with a line or two, like occasionally mentioning the words ‘bad wolf’ without further context. Furthermore, episodic stories can prove to be an advantage because it allows the audience to pick-up the show at any point during it’s run, where as one long story-arc may intimidate and alienate latecomers. I think that Young Hunters is going to do fine; it’s a different sort of season but one that should still work well.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Reiji

Hmm.. I can't remember what US Cartoon Action cartoon series I have watched, as I watched them when I was very very young. More than 10+ years ago...It will be great if Hunters only have 24 episodes, like what one of the guys have mentioned above....

  30. The Digimon Fandom = The WORST fandom in the world

    ReplyDelete
  31. MasterMDA, don't despair. There are many fandoms just as bad as Digimon's, if not worse. Sonic the Hedgehog is a famous example, or Zelda. The difference with Digimon, one that adds a justifiable tension to our observations, is that each anime incarnation brings with it the terrible spectre of being the last Digimon series ever if it messes up, or even if it doesn't.

I seriously think that XW Hunters is just worse at disguising the fact that most of its episodes are filler. But I'm sure that, after the first half-series, there will be a more prominent plot. In many ways, Hunters is the story arc that should've come first, really; malingering about in the real world having comedy antics could never be as serious as being lost in the depths of the Digital World. Although I wouldn't be surprised if such an eventuality transpired in the next half-series.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sonic fandom? You mean those idiots who b**** and moan about things like green eyes, homming attack and humans? (depsite the fact that humans have been present since the first game)

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Anonymous: Thing is, what with Taiki said about Digimon appearing in only their hometown (with a few outside incidents), makes me think that most of these episodes (on the fence with the Ramen one), are pointing towards something else; why their town? DigiQuartz has already (presumably) spread around the world, starting from Japan, so any of these digimon problems could have been placed anywhere. Plus, these digimon aren't coming right out of the blue, they're coming from the Digital World, then coming to DigiQuartz which is another problem. So if anything, I don't think these episodes are filler, but everyone's entitled to their opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "The Digimon Fandom = The WORST fandom in the world"

Well said. I mean, I don't even know why I'm reading comments, I'm trying to see something intelligent and logical but all I'm seeing is people whinging about how ADVENTURE WAS BEST MOAR ADVENTURE BRING BACK ADVENTURE and NO PLOT FILLER FILLER FILLER LOLOLOL and it's sickening.

Just because every plot point isn't telegraphed right away and handed to you on a silver platter like the early series doesn't mean they don't exist. People just don't want to pay attention or think because their nostalgia filter is set to 100% and they think this season is bad on the simple fact that it isn't the older ones.

Since I can't reply to one of the older posts, I'm going to mention that somebody on it mentioned "oh well I have to like Dragonball GT then" which is, simply putting it, laughably dense. You don't have to like it, but a real fan can always find something positive to say even about their least favorite part of the franchise.

Basically, if you hate this season so much, you're free! You don't have to call yourself a fan anymore and can dedicate yourself to better things than claiming that a children's television show went back in time and killed your childhood, ran over your dog, and slept with your mother! It's that simple!

    1. To a point, I agree with you here. Yes, I do agree that Digimon fans shouldn't get over-nostalgic and just get ticked off at this Series because it's not Adventure.

But you have to understand that there is a difference between an enjoyable Series and a high-quality Series. Yes, every Series DOES have their own shining moments that set them apart from the others. However, we as viewers should still have the right to expect the Digimon Anime franchise to improve as the years progress. Why? Because we started off on such a great standpoint. The reason why Digimon Adventure was so great was because for a kids show, it was able to develop so many characters in only around 50 episodes in very deep ways, and was able to give a decent plot. So, it's not wrong to be SOMEWHAT disappointed in the writers of later Series for not doing as well as, if not, better than the quality of what they used to do. We're supposed to progress FORWARD, not back. Now, I'm not saying that just cuz they don't do as great, that the Series automatically sucks. I for one, like ALL the Series, and even though I'm REALLY disappointed in Hunters's current storyline, I still find it enjoyable & am still watching, but I can see the Digimon Series that are overall better than others in comparison. But when that person in the previous post gave the example of DBZ to GT, that comparison was spot-on. WHY? Because even though, YES, GT did have some enjoyable moments & plus-sides, and it DOES have fans, still, overall, in terms of QUALITY, it is very lackluster in terms of the other Series due to its inconsistency w/ DBZ, plotholes & overall usage of its characters. The same can go for the Digimon Anime franchise. In terms of what's going on here with Hunters with its overload of filler & one-episode story conclusions, you can't blame fans not liking how this is going. Why? Not because of the fact that there are fillers, but the fact that WE KNOW THEY CAN DO FILLERS A LOT BETTER THAN THIS. EXAMPLES: DIGIMON TAMERS & DIGIMON DATA SQUAD. Digimon Tamers had probably the BEST done fillers because they gave loads of character development & some plot points. Digimon Data Squad also gave some character development & minor plot points in its fillers, although theirs weren't as good as Tamers. But HERE IN HUNTERS, we've gotten barely any character development or plot points in these episodes. The only things we've gotten so far are SMALL development on Yuu, a plot point w/ the Hunters Gathering, and maybe the next episode where Gumdramon meets his friend Betsumon. There may be more, but that's the problem: the fact that we're going through almost 16 episodes of filler, yet barely anything was done with them. And this brings up ANOTHER issue: I've been seeing people try to defend this by saying, "Well, maybe this'll have a more plot-focused 2nd Season." THAT'S NOT GOOD. To say that we've taken up the ENTIRE FIRST HALF OF THE SERIES IN FILLERS is HORRIBLE, which is why I'm hoping after Episode 72 we stop the fillers. If they reach 20-30 episodes of filler, then that's bad. Why? Cuz that means the actual plot might not have enough time to be fully executed well(EX: The ending battle w/ DarknessBagramon)

My overall point here is that there is a difference between what you like and what is good quality.

  39. We as viewers are the ones that keep these people in business. It's apparent they're trying to cater to the generation that grew up with adventures (hence cameo appearances, adding old members) because todays generation that are viewing Xros Wars probably have no idea who Taichi, Daisuke or Takato are. With that said I don't think we are being unloyal fans to expect better out of a series that's it's main source of profit is from its anime(because we all know it wasn't their games that got Digimon going). As a consumer I shouldnt have to wait fourteen episodes in for a storyline...or dig back a few episodes to find "hidden plots"..remember we pay these people's salaries..It seems to me that Hunters is just being used as a marketing tool for Xros Wars merchandise (IE Xros Loader). I having watched this show for 13 years and waited 4 years for a new series am incredibly disapointed that Xros Wars has proceeded into such a low note.

Being a loyal fan doesnt mean you have to accept the crud these producers are putting out for us (because yes, this series is heavily relying on 90's babies) because we all know what this anime is capable of.

It's like someone hands you a delicious ice cream consisting of Taiki and Shoutmon and then spreads their cheeks and craps all over it with fillers and Taigru, but then throws in sprinkles of Wargreymon and Taichi.

I will continue to view this show in hopes it redeems itself but it needs to come back with a vegence to restore my faith in this series.
